LIFE*MOD TIP O' DAY: This is a HOT topic! Get it? HOT! Ok enough...

START EATING HABANEROS !
Habaneros belong to the same Capsicum family of chili peppers that includes jalapenos, poblanos and bell peppers. Native to Central America, South America and the Caribbean Islands, habanero peppers are the hottest of all commercially grown chili peppers, making them a favorite with aficionados of spicy dishes. Habaneros boast more benefits than intense heat, however. They contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and the compound capsaicin. Diets rich in the nutrients provided by habanero peppers may help prevent the development of a number of potentially serious medical conditions. If you suffer from digestive system problems like chronic heartburn or irritable bowel syndrome, talk to your doctor before eating habaneros.

Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong report that laboratory hamsters fed a high-cholesterol diet had higher LDL, or bad, cholesterol levels and more cholesterol-related arterial plaques than hamsters who were fed the same diet, but supplemented with capsaicin. The scientists hypothesized that eating chili peppers such as habaneros may lower cholesterol and decrease cardiovascular disease risk, but warned that additional studies and clinical trials were necessary.

LIFE*MOD TIP O DAY

~ Do Not Turn On Your Computer or Ipad After Work Today ~

Ok. It's Friday folks! Another week gone! So today's TIP O DAY is telling you to go home after work and enjoy time by yourself or with your loved ones and not with ANY electronic gadget. Our Human Design dictates that we spend quality time with each other. This is what not only makes us human but also promotes mental health. Studies are pretty consistent with this one: If you interact socially often, you tend to be healthier and live longer. Who needs these stupid gadgets anyway? LOL

~TO AGE OR NOT TO AGE~

LIFE*MOD® CORNER WITH DR. ORLANDO V. GONZALEZ

I can’t stress enough how exciting it is to be alive during these amazing times.  The advances that we have made in this country and this world are breathtaking!  From technology to medicine to space aeronautics and astronomy, we are so advanced that it’s scary to think where the future might take us.  But let me take you on a little ride down memory lane, to a time that wasn’t that long ago, but that we all have forgotten.

Picture our ancestors five thousand years ago or even five hundred years ago.  Imagine how they were living.  Do you think there was any similarity to our current lifestyle?  Of course there wasn’t, but there might be more similarity than you think.  Our ancestors had the same pressures that we have today.  They had to eat and drink.  They had to search for shelter and weather the storms throughout their lives.  They had to ‘work’ for their food.  They formed communities and families.  They had a belief in something and they were as social as we are today.  But that’s where the similarities stop.

Forward if you will, to today’s society.  We still have to work for our food, but not as hard.  The foods that we are eating today are not as nutrient dense as before. We have learned, through our ‘advances’, how to preserve foods, package them, process them and store them, obviating the need to run after our food and hunt it.  We now drive everywhere, because well, why would we walk? We buy our food so we don’t know where it comes from and because everything is available always, we have become lazy and complacent.

So what does this all have to do with aging.  Our society has become obsessed with anti-aging techniques and procedures.  From facelifts, to the latest diets and fat burning machines, we are obsessed with looking and feeling better.  But we are looking in the wrong places.  All we have to do is look to our past.  We have to eat better, make better choices, move more, embrace social interaction and really, put down that phone or ipad and listen.  Get away from that computer screen and talk face to face to people.  Enjoy living and life.  When we start doing these things, we will realize that we are ‘living’, and that maybe, just maybe, we have found the fountain of youth.

Know Thyself~

~KNOW THYSELF~

People often ask me how it is that an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialist got involved with something like LIFE*MOD.  My answer always is, why wouldn’t I?  To me, it is completely natural to counsel, advise and prescribe to patients, ways to get healthier, fitter and ultimately live longer.

As many of you who read my columns will know, I have a deep passion for showing people how to completely change their lives.  It is always surprising to me that very few people, especially in this country, know themselves.  And what I mean about knowing themselves, I mean really knowing themselves.  Not what your favorite food is or what your favorite color might be, but really knowing your body and how to optimize your life.

People nowadays have no concept about how their body works or what it needs to fully optimize itself.  We are capable of great physical and mental and emotional feats, yet none of us really appreciate that or even believe that.  We have become a society that is stressed, constantly talks about our problems, never doing anything about them, eating on the run, never enjoying our food and never spending time with ourselves.  Yes, with ourselves.  I mean sitting in a room with no one around and listening to what our bodies are saying, or taking a trip by ourselves and experiencing what it’s like to deal with our own being on a daily basis.

As the summer ends and fall is knocking at our doorsteps, I urge each and every one of you to take time to really get to know yourself.  Listen to who you are and what you want to become as a person.  Hear your own self tell you how much it longs for peace and health.  We aren’t meant to be stressed and eat foods that have the nutritional value of grass—we are meant to be happy, eat healthy organic fresh foods, move every single day, have peace in our lives and enjoy this thing we call life.

At LIFE*MOD, every single day, we promote health, nutrition, fitness and mental peace.  We promote you.  Take this time to be a little selfish and indulge in your spirit, mind and body.  The running shoe company has it right: ASICS: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano—A healthy mind in a healthy body—

Keeping It Real~

Summer is well under way, and as such, we all are busy making travel plans, working and just trying to keep it real.  Most of us are robots, just going through our day, not paying attention to any detail and just trying to make ends meet.  Stress is all around us, from making our car payments and mortgage or rent, to paying for ever-growing gas and electric bills.  We are totally NOT living.  We are totally SURVIVING- barely

I’ve recently had the fortune of running a full marathon.  I had always had that on my bucket list and felt initially that it was not an attainable goal.  As I began the pre-determined training schedule, I realized with every run, short and long, that as long as I was committed, I would end up finishing the run.  Was it easy? No. Was it fun? Not always. But it was always worth it.  I would finish whatever run I had to do and felt like I had climbed Mt. Everest every single time.  Time went on, training continued, and in November, I ran my best marathon in New York City.

Running to me is very similar to life itself.  There will be easy days, there will be hard ones.  Sometimes it’s going to be painful, and somedays it’s going to be fun and easy.  But in the end, it is the determination and commitment that make it happen, and in the end, that’s what separates you from everyone else.  Everyone in this world can say they do this and that, and that they are capable of great things.  I agree.  Everyone is capable of anything, but only a special few turn the capable into done.

At LIFE*MOD, our new registered motto is: Victum. Vestri. Vita. Which stands for Conquer Your Life.  We are proud of our motto because at LIFE*MOD we believe that all of us are capable of amazing things. All of us are meant to inspire and accomplish incredible goals, but not all of us will attain them.  LIFE*MOD will give you the self-knowledge that you need to change the habits that you want to live the life that you deserve. Victum. Vestri. Vita.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK~

We have all heard the phrase, ‘you are what you eat’.  But just how much credence can we give to that phrase.  I’m here to tell you that now more than ever, this statement is true.  In fact, I would go farther than that and say that this phrase is what determines how long you will live!

As founder of LIFE*MOD, my experience with food and the food choices people make on a daily basis, is substantial.  It is also very shocking.  Consider this: take note of your next meal.  Actually look at the food you will be eating and ask yourself, where did this ‘food’ come from? Was it alive? And if so, how long ago? Is it marine or land based? Was it in the wild or kept in a confined space? What foods did ‘it’ eat? Or, if you are a vegetarian: where did it come from? Where was it grown? How long ago was it connected to the soil? Did it grow in the wild or did it grow on a farm, where pesticides and ‘nutrients’ were added to the soil?  I realize that most of us cannot answer any of these questions.  In our society where fast is good and bigger is better, we are just content with eating.  We don’t worry or even care where the food comes from, where it was prepared or how was it prepared.

I recently went to visit my parents in New Mexico, where they still live in the same house that I grew up in.  My dad still grows all the vegetables and fruits and herbs in his garden and they still keep animals like chickens that give them not only meat but eggs as well.  What they put in their mouths comes from their backyard.  They truly know where their food comes from and how it was prepared.  This is truly the way we should be eating and living.

I realize that most of us don’t have this luxury of raising our own food and growing our own vegetables, but we do have the ability to choose.  Get involved in your local farmer’s markets, buy food that is fresh and prepare it as soon as you can.  Don’t eat anything that has been ‘packaged’ or comes in a can.  Ask if any hormones or pesticides have been ‘added’ to your food.  When you go out to eat, research the restaurant and find out how ‘organic’ and fresh it is.  Most restaurants nowadays, have the ‘farm—to—table’ concept deeply engrained in their motto.

At LIFE*MOD, one of the five pillars we live by is nutrition.  Believe me when I tell you that you will never be truly healthy if your food intake is haphazard and unplanned.  You need to know everything you put into your mouth. You need to make great choices and you need to eat with a purpose.  After all, the best machine is you and the fuel it needs cannot be second best.  It is the food that you eat today that forms the health that you want tomorrow.  As we say at LIFE*MOD, victum vestri vita! Conquer Your Life!

Are You Really Working Out To Lose Weight Or Are You Wasting Your Time?

I’m often told by my patients that they don’t understand why they are not losing weight when they are exercising ‘every’ day.  The answer is simple: Most people have NO idea that just exercising every day isn’t going to make you lose weight.  Duration of exercise isn’t either.  It’s INTENSITY.

If you want to lose weight and get a great cardiovascular workout, you must get your heart rate to 70% to 85% of your Maximal Heart Rate and keep it there for 20 to 30 minutes consistently, two to three times per week. A rough way to measure this would be with the following formula:

220 minus your age.  Get that number and calculate 70% to 85% of that number.  This is your personal ‘magical’ number and where you want your heart to be for 20 to 30 minutes every time you work out.

Example: a 50 year-old woman:

220-50= 170 x (.85) = 144.5

In order for this patient to fully and maximally exercise, she must get her heart rate up to around 130 to 145 beats per minute and keep it there for 20 to 30 minutes.  If you have any medical issues like hypertension and/or diabetes, and if you are over 40 years of age, you need to see a sports medicine doctor first before you embark on rigorous exercise to make sure your heart can handle it.  Note that this is only part of the equation to being healthy.  We believe that small changes breed revolutionary results.  If you change your lifestyle, however small, you will see big changes and results.  Remember that consistency creates habits.  These habits then create changes in your life and in your health.  It is time for you to change your life.  It is time for you to feel energetic and youthful.  It is time for you to realize that your life and health depend on your lifestyle and you are in control of that destiny!

Is There Such Thing As Anti-Aging Medicine and Can We Turn Back The Clock?

It’s been said that health is defined as the absence of disease.  And although I think we all can agree with that, I propose a different definition.  What if being healthy meant getting younger?  What if your biological age was lower than your chronological age?  Can we be younger than our stated age?  The answer to that is YES!

Our great American culture has been set up so that we are constantly stressed and on the go.  Our food consumption consists of whatever we can get in, whenever we can get it, and however it’s done does not matter.  We eat on the go, we eat hurriedly and we never take the time to rest our minds and workout our bodies anymore. Our obesity rates are among the highest in the world and skyrocketing. Our kids are fatter than they ever have been.  Diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke are all common conditions that we have just gotten used to.  I am here to tell you that we have reached such a critical level, that we must do something today.

Imagine for a moment, that you are fit and energetic every day.  That you breath better and are able to go for a nice leisurely run every other day.  Imagine having no aches and pains, and being trim and strong.  Imagine having the sexual energy you did when you were eighteen.  You may think this isn’t possible, but it is!

Every day I have the pleasure of meeting people who do just that: people who initially come to me with complaints of tiredness, fatigue, obesity, and no sexual energy.  We figure out what it is they are doing in their life that is keeping them from being healthy and young, and we create a personalized program that incorporates small changes in their body, that creates revolutionary health.  At LIFE*MOD, our goal is to create the best, healthiest, fittest person you can be.  We do this by getting to the crux of your problem.  We look at your hormones in your body and any deficiencies you might have are supplied.  We look at your blood type and give you a list of foods that agree with your blood. We encourage you to get up and exercise and move.  We encourage you to live life the way it was intended.  Don’t get up every morning and let your life pass you by while you work yourself to death, eat unhealthy and create disease in you body.  Live your life to the fullest. Enjoy every day, take care of your body, take note of what you feed it and you will find that nature balances you in a way that is unexplainable.  You will live longer, fitter, with more energy and you will appreciate this thing we call life.
